He studied chemistry at the University of Freiburg (1973-1978) and got his PhD (1981) at ETH Zürich, Switzerland, where he started his research in the field of Ziegler-Natta catalysis. After industrial research at Du Pont Central Research in Wilmington / Delaware, USA (1981-1985) and at Ciba Plastics & Additives Research in Marly, Switzerland, he was appointed full professor (since 1989) and managing director of the Freiburg Materials Research Center (since 1992) at the University of Freiburg. He was awarded the Piero Pino gold medal by the Italian Chemical Society (2004) and the Hermann Staudinger Medal by the German Chemical Society (2009). His research interests include: polymer synthesis and polymerization catalysis, multiphase polymers, nanoparticles and dispersions, polymer nanocomposites, functional processing, and specialty polymers with tuned property profiles.
